Ringbelles Roundup (5 November 2013) – Wrestling in your area, Total Divas and tons of news

7 Rhia O'Reilly ShannaIt’s weird – this website was buzzing with stories last month as part of Open Female Fight Season, with results from Bellatrix, Absolute Intense Wrestling, Women Superstars Uncensored, SHIMMER, SHINE & NCW: Femmes Fatales all flowing in, interspersed with interviews, reaction and discussion. It was certainly a busy time for women wrestling fans, and sites dedicated to it, such as this one. You would imagine that at the conclusion of such a period, there would be a hangover of sorts where many wrestlers would rest, promotions would ease down and there would not be that much to talk about.

On the contrary, there is still plenty of goings-on.

Granted, the perceived big guns of women’s wrestling may be taking a break this month but there is a whole slew of news, which became vey evident to me as I was compiling this week’s Roundup. The Best of the Rest section is gigantic this week, crammed with results, news, title defences, title changes and so on. The women who converge in one place for a SHIMMER or WSU have returned back to their haunts to carry on plying their craft ahead of the next high-profile get together – and if you’re in the US, there are quite a few hubs.

Mercedes Martinez, Su Yung, Leva Bates, Santana Garrett, Mia Yim, Kimberly and Solo Darling are among those working around Florida on a regular basis, while people like Kimber Lee, Cherry Bomb, Marti Belle, Christina Von Eerie, Greek Barbie and others are stepping into rings in the Northeast. Mia Svensson, Reby Sky, Amber O’Neal, Amanda Rodriguez, Kacee Carlisle and more make waves in the Carolinas and surrounding states; in the Midwest there are the likes of Nevaeh, Sassy Stephie, Crazy Mary Dobson, Mickie Knuckles, Melanie Cruise, Jordynne Grace, Allysin Kay and others. A venture to Texas boasts Athena, Barbi Hayden, Angel Blue, Kc Spinelli Kenzie Vega PhotographyRuthless Lala and Jessica James, and heading to California, there’s Hudson Envy, Candice LaRae, Brittany Wonder and Terra Calaway.

It doesn’t stop there. If you look internationally, Kc Spinelli and Riea Von Slasher are tearing each other apart in Western Canada at the moment, while Nicole Matthews is also taking care of business in Vancouver. In Toronto, you will find Jewells Malone, Alexia, Jasmin, Beautiful Beaa, Xandra Bale, Leah Von Dutch, Seleziya Sparx and more, while Montreal has grapplers like Deziree, Midianne, Angie Skye, LuFisto and Bettie Rage. Scotland is busy at the moment too, with Kay Lee Ray, Bete Noire, Viper, Carmel Jacob, Sammii Jayne, Nikki Storm, Sara Marie Taylor and Debbie Sharpe expanding their reputations, while in England, you can find Erin Angel, Skarlett, Saraya Knight, Penelope, Liberty and Rhia O’Reilly – and if you look out to Europe, there’s Shanna, Miss Mina, Aurora Flame, Blue Nikita, Laura Wellings and others.

If you were to look to Australia and New Zealand, there is Madison Eagles, Kellie Skater, Shazza McKenzie, Jessie McKay, Savannah Summers, Harley Wonderland, Demi Bennett, Evie, Megan-Kate, Britenay, Scarlett, Nurse Payne, Amy St Clere, Vixsin, Storm and Eliza Sway – and don’t get me started on Japan, where there are more joshi shows in a week than you could possibly visit.

I’m not just trying to throw out a directory of names here – it’s just that scratching beneath the surface of women’s wrestling can uncover huge swathes of rising stars that you can see fairly locally, pay a relatively inexpensive amount to see and if you feel inclined, you can track their progress from someone who is green as grass to someone who is thrilling audiences on an international stage. Instead of waiting for the next Fight Season to roll around to get your women’s wrestling fix, look at what may be just down the road from you. You may have the next superstar on your doorstep, wrestling every weekend and you may be overlooking it.

Total DivasThe season one extension of Total Divas kicks off on Sunday with the show in a weird position. When we left it back on September 15, ratings had tailed off from a high of 1.67 million viewers for episode 3 to a less sparkling – but still healthy – 930,000 for episode 10. It seemed that interest in the show was on the wane, but by this point, E! had picked up the programme for six more episodes.

While a lot of the original run leaked out to the point that we knew it culminated with Natalya marrying Tyson Kidd, very little information has come out for the next half a dozen shows. The synopsis for Sunday’s episode – which was moved forward a week from its original air date of November 17 – says “As Eva Marie becomes increasingly popular, Nikki begins to feel threatened. Ariane works to control her temper. Nattie has fears regarding her return to the ring.”

It’s still pretty vague stuff, and it makes one ponder what happy ending – if any – the show will provide. Considering how AJ Lee ran the cast down just after SummerSlam and how Natalya, Naomi and Brie Bella have all had shots at the Divas Championship, you would have surmised that one of them would have claimed the belt for the big feel good moment. However, AJ still has the title and has turned back every challenge which she has faced. Instead, it could be that the big moment will be Daniel Bryan proposing to Brie, which fits in with the style of the show and the channel, so it should satisfy viewers.

As for the viewers, it appears that many are happy with it – including many wrestlers who say they don’t miss an episode. It hasn’t been so popular with critics, with MediaLife’s Tom Conroy describing it as “not very interesting”, and reports claim a lot of the WWE roster dislike the show – however, it’s not being aimed towards that audience, and fits in with the likes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Ice Loves Coco.

Total Divas has also reportedly been a financial success, which means that regardless of how popular the show is within WWE, it is going to continue. Should ratings still hold, expect a season two to be forthcoming.

Considering the buzz for the show hasn’t been as strong as when the show first launched, it will be interesting to see what the viewer numbers will be like. We’ll know in a week.

Elsewhere on the site in the last seven days, we’ve had recent video of Evie & Olivia Shaw against Britenay & Amy St Clere from a week ago, as well as a Diva Halloween Battle Royal from 2007 where Victoria was awesome. We have also posted a review of AIW’s Girls Night Out 9, which was part of an AIW double bill during Fight Season.

The best of the rest

The build up to Paige defending the NXT Women’s Championship against Emma saw another development on last Wednesday’s show. Paige had beaten Summer Rae in a non-title match when Rae’s buddy Sasha Banks came to ringside for a 2 on 1 beatdown. Emma made the save but accidentally hit the titleholder – in a reverse of what happened the week before following Banks beating Emma. The pair exchanged words again… Cody Rhodes’ new bride Brandi is to return to WWE. She was originally in developmental as Eden Stiles and requested her release in December 2011… Stephanie McMahon signed a new talent contract with WWE where she’s named as a “wrestler”. She’s not stepped into the ring since October 2003… Natalya made AJ Lee tap out to a Sharpshooter during a 6-woman tag match on SmackDown. Looks like she’s in line for the next Divas Championship shot… Speaking of Natalya, she was acknowledged on last night’s Raw as Tyson Kidd’s wife as the pair teamed up to beat Fandango & Summer Rae. Hopefully that means she’s split from the Great Khali.

Gail Kim defeated ODB on last week’s Impact Wrestling to hold onto her Knockouts Championship… TNA has taken its developmental facility in house as part of its return to Orlando, FL. That means its relationship with Ohio Valley Wrestling is over – and if they’re not moved to the Sunshine State, it means Hannah and Holly Blossom may have been shafted by TNA after being on the British Boot Camp show at the start of this year.

North America
The production team behind Hardcore Pawn: Chicago was at Lisa Marie Varon’s The Squared Circle restaurant on Sunday to start shooting a pilot reality show… Mickie Knuckles challenges D’Arcy Dixon for the RESISTANCE Pro Women’s Championship on November 23… Allysin Kay held onto the Absolute Intense Wrestling Women’s Championship on Friday night, beating MsChif… Southern Championship Wrestling Women’s Champion Santana Garrett beat Leva Bates to retain the belt on Friday. It didn’t get any better for Bates on Saturday when she was beaten by Mia Yim at Florida Underground Wrestling with Yim’s Women’s Title on the line… Best wishes to Alexia, who reportedly dislocated her shoulder during her match against Jasmin at Pure Wrestling Association’s show in Kitchener, ON, Canada on Saturday. They were part of a Quest For Glory challenge to determine entry numbers for a PWA Elite Women’s Championship gauntlet later in the night, with the ones winning in the fastest time getting the later entry and the losers and winners in slower times coming in sooner – similar to WWE’s Beat The Clock gimmick. Jasmin advanced through ref stoppage, while Jewells Malone beat Kaitlin Diemond in the other match. Defending champion Beautiful Beaa retained the title after beating Jasmin, who eliminated Malone and Diemond before getting beaten by Beaa. As a result, Malone got over by winning the qualifier in the fastest time, Jasmin got props for eliminating two competitors and Beaa retained her championship. Good gimmick, I say… Congratulations to Brittney Savage, who married former TNA wrestler Jesse Neal on Halloween… Niya won the World Xtreme Wrestling Blast Television Championship GAMI Youji Kawauchifrom Joey Janela on Saturday… Lei’D Tapa retained the Ohio Valley Wrestling Women’s Championship at the Saturday Night Special, beating Miss OVW winner Lovely Lylah… Heidi Lovelace will travel to Mexico next month to wrestle for Lucha Libra Feminil and Desastre Total Ultraviolento.

Lots of goings-on at Wednesday’s WAVE show in Tokyo. Ayako Hamada and Yuu Yamagata won the WAVE Tag Team Championship from Cherry & Shuu Shibutani, while Misaki Ohata and Mio Shirai became the next challengers by beating Tsukasa Fujimoto & Hikaru Shida. Yumi Ohka retained the Regina di WAVE Championship by beating Tomoka Nakagawa, while GAMI wrestled five matches to round off the show, losing four of them and wrestling close to an hour in total in the process… Lin Byron returned to the ring at Thursday’s Wrestling New Classic card, going to a short time limit draw against Haruka Yoshimura. Byron fractured her left foot in her successful WNC Women’s Championship defence against Serena Deeb. Speaking of defences, Syuri became only the second person to ever successfully defend the belt on the card by beating Yumiko Hotta in a match where her Reina World Championship was also on the line. Syuri’s next opponent will be Byron herself at WNC’s show on November 29… Tsukasa Fujimoto retained the ICEx∞ Championship by beating Miyako Matsumoto on Saturday’s Ice Ribbon dojo show… Dark Angel came 4th in the USBB Japan’s first ever Bikini contest… Zeuxis and Vaquerita failed in their first Reina Tag Team Championship defence on Saturday, losing to Ariya & Aki Shizuku… GAMI’s road to retirement has seen her have her head shaved. She lost a Hair v Hair match against Dump Matsumoto on Monday… Io Shirai beat Nanae Takahashi to retain the World Of Stardom Championship on Stardom’s 100th show on Monday, while Act Yasukawa won the Wonder Of Stardom belt from Dark Angel, and Alpha Female, The Female Predator Amazon & Kyoko Kimura claimed the Artist Of Stardom titles.

April Davids retained the Preston City Wrestling Cruiserweight Championship last Thursday by beating former titleholder Dave Rayne in a Fans Bring the Weapons/Domestic Objects match… Leah Von Dutch’s return to the UK has seen her notch up her first win, making Dragonita tap out to the Dutch Clutch on Saturday’s Extreme American Wrestling show in Rushton, England. She lost every single match during her visit to the country in May and June… Kay Lee Ray beat Mikey Whiplash at Insane Championship Wrestling’s show in Sunday. Carmel Jacob also defeated Bete Noire on the same show… A woman by the name of Lou Ballard – who says she is a wrestler and has been doing it for three years – is vying for the Miss Great Britain crown later this month after qualifying with the Miss Personality title. The 26-year old says because of her 5’9” height, she Lou Ballard Christopher Brickusually wrestles men. After a bit of checking, we have discovered that her debut match was a Varsity Pro Wrestling event 4 months ago as part of an 8-person tag team match where she was the only woman and has also beat Bacardi on a show from August – she’s very new, but she seems to have the fundamentals down at least. It appears she is being economical with the truth to enhance her profile, though there’s nothing really wrong with that. Best of luck to her for the competition.

Following Mary Apache, Mini Psycho Clown & Taya Valkyrie’s win over Faby Apache, Jennifer Blake & Mascarita Sagrada on Sunday, a hair match was announced with Faby Apache & Jennifer Blake against Taya Valkyrie & Mary Apache… Marcela retained the CMLL World Women’s Championship last night, beating Dalys la Caribeña for a second time.

Australia & New Zealand
Evie puts the PWWA Championship on the line on Friday for the first time since unifying the title back in August by beating Madison Eagles. She defends it in a 4-way involving Jessie McKay, Shazza McKenzie & Michelle K Hasluck – the latter of whom made a big impression at the last PWWA show, while McKay and McKenzie have been battling recently… While we’re talking about Evie, she challenges for the Impact Pro Wrestling Women’s Championship against Emmy Driver on November 16. It will be Driver’s first defence since being awarded the title in August… Scarlett is the Kiwi Pro Wrestling Women’s Champion. She beat Nurse Payne on Saturday to win the title.
