Bunch of Fives – Diva Options for WrestleMania XXX

WrestleMania
We’re on the so-called “Road to WrestleMania” in WWE – a time when, generally, it’s considered to be a good time to be a wrestling fan. If everything is going to plan, storylines and feuds will culminate at the Showcase of the Immortals, and we usually see both the in-ring performers and the booking teams step up their games as we approach the big day. However, rarely does that involve the Divas. Even as WWE prepares to induct its second former WWE Women’s Champion in two years to the Hall of Fame, it’s no shock to anybody that the Divas division is considered a mere afterthought. Statistically, we’ve already mentioned recently that Divas ≠ Ratings on TV – but as we mentioned at the time, it’s been so long since there was a Divas angle or feud with any real strong substance, it’s no wonder their segments are considered skippable. Ironically enough, Kaitlyn, who was Divas Champion at this time last year didn’t even work the WrestleMania show, and spent the weekend giving away tickets to fans who were able to find her in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, “Where’s Wally?” style. As it turned out, no Divas got to wrestle on the show last year, as the mixed tag featuring the Bellas and the Funkadactyls ended up getting nixed for time.

So… assuming that we’ll get some sort of match involving the Divas this year, here are five options (some more likely than others, admittedly) for New Orleans…

1. AJ Lee vs Naomi
Naomi Rear View on AJThis one seems like the best option given the way the booking has been going – and indeed, this was originally on the books for Elimination Chamber on February 23rd at the Target Centre in Minneapolis. However, following the kneedrop heard round the world by Aksana, Naomi is currently out with a minor fracture to her eye socket and it seems likely that surgery is required. Surgery will put her out of the rest of the WrestleMania season, knocking this option out the window – but on the offchance she’s able to either avoid surgery or have a procedure that is minimal enough but safe enough to clear her to wrestle by the start of April, we’ll leave it here as a possibility – if not a probability.

2. AJ Lee vs Mickie James
Mickie JamesNot going to lie, this one is possibly even less probable than AJ vs Naomi – but at the same time it’s a pretty great idea. Here at Ringbelles HQ we’ve privately discussed the just how useful Mickie James could be for WWE in 2014. Having already helped out down at NXT a while back, the company connections are still there – but we believe that having a Mickie James on the main roster would be a great opportunity for some of these women on the main roster to work with a more established name – and as we continue to see the NXT call ups in the next year or so, James would be a fantastic transitional figure from what Sara Del Rey does in NXT – a kind of “player/coach” similar to the role Finlay played with some of the greener guys a few years back. But if you’re bringing in someone like Mickie James, you might as well get the most out of them as quickly as you can with their return angle. We know AJ Lee has been portrayed for much of her run as the “Crazy Chick” – so wouldn’t it be interesting to see her go against the person who not only did it before her, but perfected it on the Road To WrestleMania 23 (which was, coincidentally, the last time the Divas have ever gone into WrestleMania on the back of a genuinely strong storyline). With the lack of any other credible challengers amongst the current Divas crop, Mickie James would be your best bet for someone who could actually come in and add depth and talent to the division and add immediate interest to a WWE Divas Title match. Lest we forget that she was doing some of her best work in years not long before leaving TNA?

3. Multi-Woman match for the Divas Championship
Multi WomenThis is arguably the most likely scenario as it gets everybody on the card. It may be anything from a triple threat match to a six pack challenge… who knows? Presumably you’d have people in the corners as well (possibly Naomi could appear in Cameron’s corner if she’s medically able – and I’d rather see the likes of Eva Marie and Aksana acting as seconds rather than doing the match). You could have something like AJ (w/ Tamina) vs Cameron (w/ Naomi) vs Brie Bella (w/ Nikki) vs Natalya (w/ Eva Marie) vs Alicia Fox (w/ Aksana). No, it’s not particularly creative – and no, it’s not particularly appetising – but it gets the Divas on the show, mostly in one segment, and needn’t last too long. There’s no real heat behind any of the challengers other than possibly Cameron doing it for her injured partner – but I guess there’s still time to add some sizzle to the match with some booking in the weeks to come. The old romantic in me has always quite liked the idea of Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan winning their respective titles on the same night – so with rumours suggesting the possibility of adding Bryan to the otherwise rather cold Orton/Batista match for the WWE World Title, I kind of like the idea of having Brie involved in a match where she can win the Divas title on the same night. I’m setting myself up for disappointment on this one, almost certainly – but who knows?

4. Divas vs Total Divas
BellasThis is the alternate plan to option three. If you’re not putting the belt on the line in the match, why not split the teams down the Divas v Total Divas lines? Yes, it’d be *yet another* meaningless multi-woman tag team match, but this *is* WWE and it’s certainly the easiest option yet. The possible fly in the ointment of this match would be Summer Rae, the new addition to the cast for Season 2, who may well seem out of place as the only out-and-out heel on the otherwise babyface Total Divas team. Total Divas will be back airing on E! before WrestleMania with new episodes, so perhaps this will be an attractive option for creative, although as we recently pointed out, AJ’s “Pipebombshell” last year (which would’ve been the perfect kickoff for a “proper” feud between the stars of the show and the other Divas) went nowhere. This one is a safe choice, and ultimately a boring choice.

5. Santino Marella & Emma vs Fandango & Summer Rae
Emma and SantinoWWE have never been shy about dropping the Divas Champion from the WrestleMania card if there’s no compelling use for her (Kaitlyn in 2013, Eve Torres in 2011), so perhaps AJ Lee won’t even feature at the big show. One could argue that if the WWE braintrust are still upset at CM Punk walking away from the company recently, the *really* childish thing to do would be to punish his girlfriend by denying her a WrestleMania payday. If AJ doesn’t make the card, the only other natural rivalry that is burgeoning in the company at the minute is that between Summer Rae and newcomer Emma. Now, Emma hasn’t exactly gotten over like gangbusters in her first few appearances, but it doesn’t look like this feud has reached a head yet. The four had a really rather fun mixed tag match on NXT a while back… I wonder if this would play on the WrestleMania stage? Or with seven weeks of TV between now and WrestleMania, is it even possible to extend this feud that far? I doubt it somehow. This may well be at Elimination Chamber next weekend.

Sound off in the comments or on social media… with 50 days to go until WrestleMania XXX, what do *you* want to see in New Orleans?
