Ringbelles Roundup (4 March 2014) – The rises of Paige, Liberty & Penelope

PaigeThese Brits seem to be doing pretty well for themselves. In WWE, Paige is still NXT Women’s Champion after defeating Emma on the first live show in the feeder system’s history. Broadcast on the WWE Network, social media was buzzing after the match with praise for both women – though it was the 21 year old from Norwich who had the focus as the winner.

As a showcase for the up and coming women in Florida, it was a great piece of work which dispelled the recurring criticism that Divas can’t wrestle. Given the chance to go out there with no gimmicks or distractions as well as enough time to tell a story, the pair proved that women do have a place in a wrestling ring in the top company in the world. That sentiment was shared by trainer Sara Del Rey, who said “Congratulations @RealPaigeWWE and @EmmaWWE you both are paving the way!!!”, and Stephanie McMahon sang their praises in a post-show interview. Indeed, there were many plaudits singing their praises.

As well as having the confidence to let Paige and Emma go out there and do their thing, they also put the marketing machine behind its Women’s Champion by releasing a t-shirt for her. Considering how little merchandise WWE had for its women up until last year and how she isn’t even on the main roster yet, it’s a real sign that the company is high on the former Britani Knight.

So what’s next? Many would argue that Paige is ready to follow in the footsteps of Emma and Summer Rae by graduating to Raw and SmackDown, but there’s still no rush. At 21, she still has her whole life in front of her and there is no rush in trying to introduce another woman to the mix while fans are still getting used to Emma. Patience is a virtue in this case – and when the time is right she’ll come on like gangbusters.

Meanwhile back in her hometown, there are a couple of other women who are impressing on the indie scene…

24 Liberty Saraya Knight BellatrixPaige’s final weekend in her family’s promotion of the World Association of Wrestling saw the young lady known as Britani Knight drop her British Championship to Liberty, who had turned heel and experienced her breakout moment. Taking the bull by the horns, the new titleholder’s performances continued improving, and led to a babyface turn at Bellatrix 4 after losing the belt to Rhia O’Reilly on the previous show. Her next evolutionary jump took place at Bellatrix 5 when she won the RQW European Women’s Championship and then main-evented the following events against Shanna and Sammi Baynz, kicking off a rivalry with Courtney Rush in the process.

That led to Sunday’s Bellatrix 8 show with Liberty rising to the top of the heap by winning the Bellatrix World Championship in another quality outing for the talented 20 year old – an opportunity that she didn’t think would arise. Bursting into tears at the conclusion of the match, it is certainly a milestone. Only the third Brit to hold the belt since the title’s creation in 2006 – the others being Saraya Knight and Destiny – the title has also been in the hands of overseas talent like Greece’s Blue Nikita, America’s Allison Danger and Canada’s Rush since 2008.

Speaking after the show, Rush tweeted:

I just want to say how proud I was of being part of Bellatrix 8 tonight. Every single girl on that show busted her arse and showed so much heart and proved they belonged there and deserved to be showcased, both to the live crowd and to a wider, international audience. I truly believe all you wonderful women’s wrestling fans would find your money’s worth in adding this DVD to your collection. And to Liberty: you brought a fight to me tonight. Well deserved, champ. However, I expect a Round 2 someday.

Joining Liberty in her celebrations was another young woman who put together another strong performance in a technical showcase against Saraya for the IndyGurlz Australia title.

5 Penelope BellatrixOn the same night that Liberty stepped out from the pack by winning the British Title from Britani, Penelope was taking her first timid steps en route to a defeat at the hands of O’Reilly. However, the youngster has developed at a rapid pace and is now nipping at the heels of the new World Champion, having closed the talent gap, meaning that there are now two hugely talented women ready to steamroll forward in Bellatrix. Penelope is yet to gain a title in the promotion, but one would imagine that it won’t be like that for long.

When Britani Knight left British shores for her new adventure, there were questions about whether Bellatrix (or its previous guise of the World Association of Women’s Wrestling) would find anyone talented enough to fill the gap. We may have found two – possibly three, considering Sammi Baynes strong return to the fold after a number of years away from the ring…
