Matches for the 2014 5*STAR Grand Prix are announced

STARDOM 5STAR GPBack in June, it was reported that Cheerleader Melissa would be heading back to Japan for another round of competition under World Wonder Ring STARDOM. Her previous trip seen her fought Io Shirai for the World of STARDOM Championship and was unsuccessful in taking a third title back to the United States. This time around the reigning SHIMMER Champion will be making her first appearance as part of the promotion’s annual 5*STAR Grand Prix. The round-robin tournament will feature Cheerleader Melissa and several other competitors fighting for the prized 2014 5*STAR GP trophy and a guaranteed shot at the World of STARDOM Title down the line. Like years past, the tournament will be under round-robin rules as competitors are divided into two blocks with the winners facing off in the finals on September 23rd at Korakuen Hall.

Following the promotion’s “Stardom X Stardom” which featured Yoshiko ending Shirai’s 468-day reign as World of STARDOM Champion and two additional title switches, the promotion has officially announced the competitors for each league and their pairings for each round. Shirai, Kaori Yoneyama, Cheerleader Melissa, Nanae Takahashi, Kairi Hojo and Star Fire will be competing in the Red Stars league. While Takumi Iroha, Mayu Iwatani, Koguma, Kyoko Kimura, Yoshiko and DASH Chisako will be battling through the Blue Stars league. A win through pinfall or submission will amount to two points, a draw equates to one point and a loss amounts to zero.

Kicking off on Sunday, August 24th at Shinkiba 1st RING, Cheerleader Melissa will meet Shirai in the first round of the tournament in non-title contention as Shirai has dropped the title to Yoshiko, despite still holding the High Speed Championship. Kaori Yoneyama will be taking on Star Fire for the first time, as this too is Fire’s first appearance. The recently crowned Goddesses of STARDOM Champions in Nanae Takahashi and Kairi Hojo will face off in one-on-one competition, with either titleholder getting the opportunity to one up each other. The Blue Stars league will feature DASH Chisako taking on Takumi Iroha, Koguma going up against Kyoko Kimura and the current Wonder of STARDOM Champion Mayu Iwatani will be taking on World of STARDOM Champion Yoshiko.
