Ringbelles Roundup (14 October 2014) – SHIMMER weekend is looming, Kay Lee Ray makes history & more

Stewart Allen Lee Burton Amazing KongFirst off, thanks to everyone for their comments, messages and the like over the passing of Stewart Allen overnight on Sunday. The outpouring of emotion for him on social media has been hugely overwhelming and proves just how much he meant to so many people as well as how the wrestling community bands together in times of sadness.

I’m also glad that so many of you appreciated the comments I wrote on the website yesterday – it was the least I could do for someone who became one of my best friends over the seven years that I knew him. To see it shared around to commemorate such a great man makes me happy for him.

It’s still weird to think that I’m not going to chat garbage with him for hours on end. Wrestling, Doctor Who, Strictly Come Dancing, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, films… these all got covered in great length – so much so that we discussed recording them and uploading them as a podcast filled with random flotsam and jetsam about whatever came to mind, though we agreed that it would feel like a silly vanity project. In retrospect, I wish we had recorded them to listen back to – though that brings me to another point.

I’ve also seen speculation online about the future of this very website. Apart from it being someone premature and a bit tactless, the honest answer is that I don’t know. This is a joint project which Stew and I spent six months preparing and have been running for more than three and a half years. Continuing Ringbelles solo would be is a decision which will not be made without a clear head and a lot of discussion with people whose opinions I value. There’s a lot to think about and now is certainly not the time to do it.

So with that said, let’s look at what’s coming up this weekend.

Kana SHIMMERA tribute will be paid to Stew at SHIMMER Women Athletes at the Eagles Club in Berwyn, IL which he visited on 12 different occasions between April 2008 and April this year. He’s seen 50 of the 66 shows in person and this weekend promises to be as star-studded as any of the shows in the past – though there has only been two wrestlers who have been officially announced so far.

Cheerleader Melissa and Kana will square off on volume 67 on Saturday afternoon with the former’s singles championship on the line. Kana is on a four-match win streak while Melissa is 18 months into her second reign with the title, and each has a win over the other – Melissa in singles action while Kana holds a tag team victory.

With only one match announced, the promotion’s Saturday tapings will likely be a sell-out, which is hugely commendable on a number of levels. While other groups have recently experienced issues with generating big crowds – Absolute Intense Wrestling, SHINE and Women Superstars Uncensored have seen limited numbers – SHIMMER has managed to get virtually every seat sold with just one match announced and nobody else officially announced for the roster. What we do know is that there will be 38 women on Saturday and 40 on the Sunday so the events should be chock-full of matches – and we have some idea on who will be there based on the advertising.

Heidi Lovelace SHIMMERInstead of naming talent, SHIMMER has produced adverts with photos of some of the women who have appeared in the past, hinting that they will be there again. Therefore, you can be pretty confident that Nikki Storm, Athena, Cherry Bomb, Jessicka Havok (presumably because SHIMMER is a DVD product it doesn’t tread on TNA’s toes), Kay Lee Ray, Veda Scott, Mia Yim, Leva Bates, Crazy Mary Dobson, Madison Eagles, Nicole Matthews, Evie, LuFisto, Marti Belle, Thunderkitty, Nevaeh and Heidi Lovelace will be part of the proceedings. Also, SHIMMER has posted a few videos on its Facebook and Twitter with recurring talents like Mayumi Ozaki and Kaori Yoneyama featured, so they may be part of the joshi contingent.

As for storylines, LuFisto could possibly renew her quest for the SHIMMER Championship, Matthews and Eagles will likely continue their coffee war, Havok may have her sights set on Portia Perez after Portia accidentally knocked out Jessicka with a wrench, causing her to lose to Lovelace. Speaking of Heidi, she, KLR, the Kimber Bombs and Evie all came out of the last weekend with strong momentum so their ascents may continue. Either way, everyone who will be in attendance over Saturday and Sunday are sure to get a treat.

Elsewhere on the website this week, we’ve had joshi footage including the final defence of the Wrestling New Classic Women’s Title and the final show in the Stardom 5*STAR GP. We also posted a great Retro featuring Ivory v Natalya from 2005 and also had a fun interview with Leah Von Dutch about SHINE, her European tour and investing in your own brand.

Torrie Wilson tweeted that Eva Marie is her favourite WWE Diva, saying there was “something about her”… Paige was featured in the Malaysia edition of FHM Magazine as part of the promotion’s tour of the country – the first in more than a decade. In the interview, she said that Lita, Steve Austin and Bull Nakano were her favourite wrestlers growing up… Vickie Guerrero was invited to SmackDown’s 15th anniversary show last week but declined due to her current work commitments… The Bellas finally had some physical interaction in a match on last week’s Main Event. Nikki, Cameron, Summer Rae & Layla defeated Brie in a handicap match when Nikki used the Rack Attack on her sister… Layla walked out on AJ Lee during the tag team match against Paige and Alicia Fox on last night’s Raw. The Divas Champion still got the win by pinning Fox with a Shining Wizard before beating up Layla. It seems like Fox is there to be the cannon fodder to protect Paige from being beaten. Elsewhere, Brie Bella, Natalya & Naomi beat Nikki Bella, Summer Rae & Cameron with Brie pinning her sister after escaping the Rack Attack. The sisters will face each other at Hell in a Cell on October 26 with the loser having to be the winner’s personal assistant. No, really. This feud is the pits, and quite why WWE didn’t wait for Brie to get her first pin over Nikki until the PPV is beyond me.

Madison Rayne earned a shot at the Knockouts Championship after beating Angelina Love and Taryn Terrell in a 3-way on last wee’s Impact Wrestling… TNA President Dixie Carter apologised on Friday for a tweet that seemed to poke fun at the typhoon headed for Japan, which has already caused fatalities. She also deleted a tweet where she asked if Bound For Glory would discover a new Eddie Guerrero. Friday was not a good social media day for Dixie… Havok successfully defended the Knockouts Championship at Bound For Glory in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday by beating Velvet Sky with a bearhug.

Hudson Envy will put her Alternative Wrestling Show Women’s Championship on the Maria Kanellisline against Cheerleader Melissa… Lucky Pro Wrestling Women’s Champion Davienne teams with Taeler Hendrix against Rosita & Alexxis Nevaeh on November 1… Congratulations to Maria Kanellis, who married Mike Bennett on Friday. Elsewhere, Legendary retained the Tag Team Championship by beating the Buddy System and Leah Von Dutch scraped past Saraya Knight with a DQ victory… Tessa Blanchard beat Tina San Antonio, Renee Michelle & Jenny Rose to win the Eat Coast Wrestling Association Women’s Championship on Saturday. Jones & Ryan Stone… Deep Southern Championship Wrestling ran an all-women show on Saturday with Kacee Carlisle beating the Black Widow in the main event… Mick Foley’s daughter Noelle, 20, is reportedly training to become a wrestler. Standing close to 6 feet tall, she is certainly a striking young woman.

LLPW-X ran a rare show at the weekend. Shinobu Kandori, Dump Matsumoto & Yoshiaki Fujiwara defeated Genichiro Tenryu, Chigusa Nagayo & Yumiko Hotta in Saturday’s main event… Tsubasa Kuragaki unseated AKINO yesterday to win her first OZ Academy Openweight Championship. AKINO’s reign lasted for 537 days, making her the longest reigning singles champion in the promotion’s history.

Debbie Sharpe stood in for Shanna in the 3-way on Discovery Wrestling’s debut show on Saturday. She and Sammii Jayne lost to Viper… Kay Lee Ray won Europe’s first ever Aerial Assault match on Sunday’s Southside Wrestling show when she defeated Ryan Smile, Shane Strickland, Rich Swann, El Ligero & Will Ospreay to retain the Speed King Title – though she’s renamed it the Speed Kimber Lee Kay Lee Ray 1Queen Title. She also beat Kimber Lee the previous evening with her belt on the line. Kimber’s UK debut was on Thursday when she beat Violet O’Hara – Violet has been told to take some time off after suffering an undisclosed injury during the match… Blue Nikita and Lady Lory had their first ever match against each other on Saturday for Svensk Wrtestling Syd. Nikita won a street fight… Speaking of Lory, she puts the Italian Championship Wrestling Women’s Title on the line against former titleholder Queen Maya this Saturday… Violet O’Hara and Fiona Fraser have been added to Fierce Females’ charity show taking place on October 26.

Australia & New Zealand
The title v title clash between the Riot City Wrestling and Warzone Wrestling Women’s Champions ended inconclusively. Harley Wonderland attacked Demi Bennett during her match with Savannah Summers on Saturday to cause the DQ… Megan-Kate no-showed Impact Pro Wrestling’s show on Saturday. She had been called out by Britenay… NHB Girls is teaming with Melbourne City Wrestling for an all-woman charity show on November 23.
