Ringbelles Roundup (9 December 2014) – Bye Brittany, welcome back Santana Garrett, Charlotte appears on Raw & more

Santana GarrettA lot of things happened at last Friday’s SHINE 23 event – as angles go, probably too many as it was overkill by the time the main event rolled around – but integrated into all the post-match beatdowns and screwy finishes was the return of one Santana Garrett, who entered the ring from through the audience in Ybor City, FL and confronted her former tag team partner Amber O’Neal, who had turned heel a few months ago. Saying that Amber was better than this, she tried to talk some sense into her former friend, but Amber was having none of it – renaming herself Amber Gallows and making sure we all knew her allegiance was with the Bullet Club.

The pair fought in the semi-main of the show with Santana getting the pinfall before Gallows attacked a member of the ring crew to regain the heat she could have maintained had she been booked to win. However, aside from the fact that her re-emergence and return match in SHINE after a year away was not advertised and consequently generated zero dollars for the promotion, the big question was how she could work the show despite being a member of the TNA roster, and they’re not keen on talent working iPPVs…

As it turns out, the former Brittany is no longer under contract to the promotion. After 9 months where she went from superfan of Madison Rayne to having a same-sex crush with all the subtlety of a cordless drill to the head to being a jilted heel to coming onto former stalker Samuel Shaw and then becoming his main squeeze, a lot was packed into the 26-year old’s 12 months with the promotion – and as a consequence, none of it stuck. She was thrown from one angle to another without any time to let things settle and was doomed from early on. It’s mostly because of the rushed Trish Stratus-Mickie James facsimile without the chance to let fans get used to who Brittany really was. Consequently her heel turn after just four months in the promotion didn’t really resonate and she was beaten all of the time so her momentum was killed Brittany Madison Rayne Santana Garrettas both a heel and babyface by the time summer was over. Consider this – Brittany wrestled just 12 matches for TNA during her time there, and won none of them. Not one. She even lost at Knockouts Knockdown 2 to Mia Yim, so the visitor beat the resident member of the roster, which is never a good sign.

After such a disappointing run where she was grossly miscast as a sleazy heel and hindered from being given the dreaded losing streak, it’s no real surprise that she decided to cut her losses and leave the company while it’s in its lull period as part of the transition between Spike and Destination America. She showed up at SHINE on Friday and also got in touch with the Cauliflower Alley Club – which awarded her the Future Legend moniker earlier this year – to inform them that she is ready to accept bookings for 2015 and is supplementing her income with modelling.

Tellingly, Garrett posted a message on her Facebook yesterday saying “Life is too short to be unhappy”, though Ed Laredo – who was in attendance at SHINE on Friday and wrote a report for the Wrestling Observer website – “I talked to Santana after the show and she said she might not be done with TNA; just waiting for everything to settle down with the move to Destination America and there is still a chance she may be brought back – but until then she is very happy to be back with SHINE”.

If it is the end for Brittany, it’s hard to argue that her run was anything but a disappointment. I would imagine that she has been able to glean some experience of things around working for TV – including things like time cues, camera awareness and so on – which she can use in the future. Hopefully her time in TNA doesn’t harm her marketability as far as possibly working for WWE is concerned either – she received a tryout in September last year in a match against current NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte where she fell to the Natural Selection. As an Orlando native, she is in the perfect position to get noticed and here’s hoping that her role in the opposition does not work against her. As a babyface, she is very likeable and easy to get behind and she can also work heel – albeit being more suited to being a cheeky and prissy villain rather than being dark and dastardly. I hope that she gets another – and more satisfying – bite of the cherry in the future.

Charlotte defeated Mia Yim in less than a minute on last week’s NXT as a foil for a segment involving Charlotte, her next Women’s Title challenger Sasha Banks and their respective associates Bayley and Becky Lynch. It ended with Becky distracting Charlotte enough for Sasha to nail a lungblower and end the segment standing over her rival with the title belt held aloft… NXT Diva Devin Taylor will be a contestant on the next season of ABC’s The Bachelor under her real name of Brittany Fetkin. It kicks off next month… Carmella worked babyface at an NXT house show on Thursday, teaming with Bayley in a losing effort against Sasha and Becky, then the result was reversed on Saturday… AJ Lee accompanied her husband CM Punk to UFC 181 on Charlotte Natalya WWESaturday… Charlotte made her first appearance on the main roster on Sunday’s house show in Charlotte, NC. She, Emma & Alicia Fox defeated Paige and Brie & Nikki Bella when Charlotte rolled up Brie for the win. Paige blamed the twins afterwards and the Bellas argued… Charlotte also made her first TV appearance on last night’s Raw where she lost to Natalya in what was meant to be an advert for her match this week at R Evolution. Why the bookers thought a defeat would be the right choice baffles me, but she looked great in defeat. Elsewhere on Raw, AJ – who won the Slammy award for Diva of the Year – defeated Summer Rae and also promised to win the Divas Title back from Nikki Bella at TLC on Sunday… A new commercial aired for season 3 of Total Divas – Summer Rae and Naomi were not featured in it… Summer Rae and Alicia Fox will visit member of the US Armed Forces abroad as part of the annual Tribute to the Troops show.

Kay Lee Ray lost out in the final of British Boot Camp 2. She and Rampage Brown were beaten to the contract by Mark Andrews. KLR lost her test match against Gail Kim and in a weird way to end the show, Dixie Carter pointed out their shortcomings before picking a winner.

She and Kellie Skater defeated Hikaru Shida & Kaho Kobayashi in the opening match of Thursday’s OZ Academy event, while she joined up with Jungle Jack 21 stablemates AKINO & Aja Kong to beat Dynamite Kansai, Mayumi Ozaki & Kyoko Kimura in the main event. Nakagawa will wrestle her final dates in the US next spring as part of the SHIMMER tapings… Io Shirai is a double champion in Stardom again. She revealed that her name was Veronica Quintanilla, a 7-year pro from Monterrey. Elsewhere on the card, NWA World Women’s Champion Barbi Hayden went to a draw with LLF Champion Princesa Maya.
