Melina booked for UK promotion next April

MelinaIt’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything from former WWE Women’s and Divas Champion Melina, but today we learned that she is to make her first independent appearance in the UK.

The 35-year old – who was released from WWE in August 2011 after a number of alleged controversies – will appear for Southside Wrestling Entertainment at the promotion’s Raw Deal 4 show in Stevenage, England on April 12 next year. At the moment it is unclear if she is wrestling or not but considering the expense it must be to bring her to the UK, you would imagine that she will be booked against a British talent which could be beneficial for both sides. Perhaps she will wrestle the reigning Queen of Southside – a title which will see an inaugural champion crowned in a 4-way match in February.

Southside has a strong reputation when it comes to booking female wrestlers. In the past, it has signed Amazing Kong, Candice LeRae, Kimber Lee, Emi Sakura, SoCal Val and more. However, this must be the promotion’s highest-profile female import to date.

Melina has not wrestled many matches since her release more than three years ago. Her first booking was meant to be against Serena Deeb at Women Superstars Uncensored‘s Breaking Barriers 2 show but Deeb was forced to pull out due to a concussion, so she wrestled and defeated Lexxus on the show instead. She has also worked for Family Wrestling Entertainment and Lucha Libre USA as well as working in the Philippines and Puerto Rico, but records show that she hasn’t really laced up the boots since July 2012, which means she will have been out of the ring for close to three years by the time this show rolls around.

Having said that, Melina was a big part of the Divas division during her six years with WWE. Winning the Women’s Title three times and capturing the Divas Championship on two separate occasions, she was the figurehead of the female roster for some time. Her absence from the ring in that time should also help to create extra anticipation, as her rare appearances will make this one extra special. You can book tickets by clicking here.
